The world is such a big place that sometimes we get too focused on our own issues and problems, but there are constantly other people that are having their own issues around the world. Very recently, like yesterday, there was a very dangerous situation in Killeen, Texas that lead to the death of three soldiers and sixteen wounded soldiers. This all occurred at the Fort Hood base where Spec. Ivan Lopez came into the base shooting his own comrades. Ivan was not healthy and very sick because he was undergoing a mental illness. That still doesn't excuse him for his actions but he was not the only one to attack Fort Hood. In 2009 Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan did almost the same thing but on a larger scale, killing thirteen people and injuring thirty-two people. Nobody knows the exact reason behind Lopez, but it could have something to do with a mental illness. Hopefully there won't be another situation like this anytime soon.
For a mass shooting to occur at Fort Hood within ten years is ridiculous. I don’t understand how a fortified Fort like this could be attacked twice with such catastrophic results. Either they needed to step up their security a lot and do better background checks. Also they need to take much more care for mental illness because it has caused many deaths throughout the years. We need to start treating mental illness as a serious issue and make sure that the soldiers coming back are sane. I can’t blame some soldiers coming back home with some mental issues so it should be our job to help them get through their problems when they get back home. This also goes into the problems of gun control and how both of the shooters were easily able to get guns at a local gun store. Now I know all of these problems can't be fixed in a day but the same things have been happening for a while and need to be stopped.
